Marianne at Apple Camp

Wow, apple camp. I had no idea such a thing existed. Is it quite technical?

Actually, the subtitle for this could be 'demonstrating that Mac OS X and iLife are so well-designed that a pair of nine-year-olds can write, film and edit a SF story, and burn it to DVD, in 2 1/2 hours, with no previous knowledge and only a little help from their respective parents'. It was a blast, in fact. T-shirts! Field notebooks! badges! Getting to be a movie director! And Marianne seemed to have fun too...

They have four different sessions; making a movie, writing a song, doing a podcast, and producing a website, all free. Though if you don't have the relevant kit at home, or don't want to make it available to your 8-12 year old, then there could be some pester power -- in our case I think we have all the 'raw materials' to hand. Partly it's just to enthuse the kids and the parents by showing them what can be done with Macs, right out of the box, along with stuff like a DV camcorder that lots of people have at home anyway.

One of the kids at our session was clearly exceptional -- he didn't want to wear the camp t-shirt because it wasn't cool enough, but his team filmed and edited a genuinely atmospheric and scary horror short, from scratch, in the store.

Details at http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/summercamp/ though I think they're coming to an end now.
